Vegan 'Pepero'-Sticks (Homemade Chocolate-Covered Breadsticks)

Fun fact: I originally studied East Asian Studies, or more precisely Korean Studies. And because each year, November 11th is ‘Pepero’-Day in Korea and a lot of people are gifting their friends and loved ones ‘Pepero’ (aka chocolate-covered cookie-/breadsticks), I, as a little college freshman back in autumn 2015, started to make those sweet chocolate sticks at home myself.

(And yes, I did bring them to uni with me and shared them with my classmates. ‘Best student’, I’d say, hehe). However, since then it has become some sort of tradition to make them not only each year on November 11th, but also as a little gift to every other occasion because they’re just so easy and quick to make! 3 simple basic ingredients and you’re good to go!

and now here is the recipe for:

Vegan ‘Pepero’-Sticks

Ingredients*:

  • vegan breadsticks, grissini or pretzel sticks

  • vegan chocolate of choice

  • some coconut oil (optional, to help melt the chocolate)

  • spices and other add-ins (optional, e.g. pumpkin spice, cinnamon, matcha,..)

  • various little toppings (e.g. nuts, dried fruits, cookies or your fav cereal!)

Instructions:

  1. First melt down your chocolate together with some coconut oil and add your spices of choice or, when using vegan white chocolate, add some matcha or ground cherryblossom- or raspberry powder to color your chocolate.

  2. Now chop or crumble your toppings into small bits, add to separate bowls and set aside.

  3. Break your breadsticks in half and cover almost completely with chocolate, leaving only one end uncovered.

  4. Then sprinkle your toppings onto the chocolate-covered part of the breadsticks, place them on some parchment paper and leave them to cool until the chocolate hardens again.

  5. When the chocolate has become solid again, store your ‘pepero’-sticks in an airtight container to keep them crunchy. Done!

Why November 11th? Because the numbers look like four ‘peperos’, hihi.

*Notes:

  1. This recipe doesn’t really need exact written-down ingredients. Just use your favorite toppings, chocolate and breadsticks! You can really get creative with the ingredients, my favorite flavor combos are for example vegan white chocolate with matcha, dried cranberries and coconut flakes or dark semi-sweet chocolate with pumpkin spice and cookie or cereal crumbles! :)
